Welcome once again to Inside Sports with yours truly, the General. And as always, there were a lot of interesting things that happened in sports.

Let’s start everything off with some news that some expected and some thought they would never hear again. Wide receiver Randy Moss made the announcement on Monday that he would like to return to the NFL. This is not a joke people. He really does want to play again. Randy hasn’t necessarily been considered the model teammate throughout his career, but what he does bring is a gamebreaker offensively.

The big question now is who will take a chance on him? Does he go back to New England perhaps? Or does he go to a team like the Jets along with possibly Peyton Manning? Only time will tell, but it should be interesting to see if he does get a shot with a team and if he can produce at the level that we have seen from him for the majority of his career.

Another guy that is considered a speed merchant is Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson. It is being reported that the Eagles have decided to place the franchise tag on Jackson. For those that don’t know what the franchise tag is, it’s when a team tags a player for a one year deal so they can retain the rights to him and keep him on their squad. The team that places the tag on that player also has to pay that player the average salary of the top 5 players at that position.

This seems like a good thing on the outside looking in. Jackson is a serious deep threat with game-breaking speed, but which DeSean will we get if he is in Philly to start the year? Will we get the player who seems to be distracted with contract talk or will we get the guy that can change the game with one play?

The Eagles are either betting that last year, which was Jackson’s worst in the NFL, will be an aberration and not the reality of his game or they are trying to make sure they get something via trade for Jackson, like another 1st round pick, for a team who would like to obtain his services. It should be fun to watch this all play out in the City of Brotherly Love.

In the college game, another change has happened that will be altering the collegiate landscape. The Mountain West Conference and Conference USA have decided to merge together to form one huge conference. From what I have heard, the new conference, which has yet to be named, will begin play in 2013-2014. Here are the teams that will be in the conference:  Southern Mississippi, Tulsa, Rice, Marshall, UTEP, UAB, Tulane, East Carolina, UNLV, New Mexico, Wyoming, Colorado State, Hawaii (football only), Air Force, Fresno State and Nevada.

I’m wondering what this conference is going to do? I don’t see anyone in this group that could really make any impact on the gridiron and in basketball I see only one team that is really a viable team to cause problems (UNLV).  It seems like this combining of conferences is a desperate effort by some desperate colleges and universities for attention. These conferences will be losing all their big guns (Memphis, Boise State, TCU, San Diego State, SMU, Houston, Central Florida) to the Big East and the Big 12 and I think that they think there is strength in numbers. But in this instance, I don’t think there is too much strength in these numbers.

This is yet another example of how money and perception is ruining collegiate sports. Since when does Boise State classify as a team in the Big East? Since when does Memphis classify as a team in the Northeast? All this conference realignment is getting out of hand.

March Madness is something that I love to watch. Well, Alabama coach Anthony Grant has had his own madness going on with his basketball team. Grant suspended starting point guard Jamychal Green, starting point guard Trevor Relaford and reserve guard Andrew Steele before their game against the LSU Tigers due to conduct detrimental to the team. The Crimson Tide went on to lose that game, but a lesson was taught there. Grant does not tolerate any mess and I commend him for sitting those three guys down. We always hear about the bad things that coaches do, but in this instance, he was correct in doing what he did and exhibited great character.

Since that game, Relaford and Steele have been allowed to rejoin the team, but I bet these kids learned their lesson and that is you are not only a basketball player and a student, but a human being and you will act accordingly and follow the rules or suffer the consequences.

Speaking of acting accordingly, this was totally absent when two rival schools, one predominantly white and the other predominantly black, played each other. The two teams were headed into the locker room after halftime when three students from Pittsburgh Brentwood High School, the predominantly white school, ran on the court in banana suits. But this was not it, as the Monessen players were surrounded by fans of the Pittsburgh Brentwood school as well.

The fans, along with the three students, began to make monkey noises and saying some racially-toned insults to them. And what is even worse is the security guard watching this incident just sat on the side and watched the incident happen.

There is no place for this kind of craziness and the kids that took part in this incident should not be allowed at any sporting events for the rest of the year and the next year, if they are there. Also, the three kids who started this should have to go up to each and every player on the opposing team and personally apologize to them without the suits. This type of mess should not be tolerated and it makes me wonder what these kids’ parents are teaching them because these kids just didn’t wake up and think this was a good idea. They must have seen it somewhere. Also, I would discontinue this rivalry because the next incident, if there is one, could be worse than this.

I want to close with sending my condolences to the family of Whitney Houston. Houston passed away this weekend the day before the Grammys. She will surely be missed and she will forever be remembered in my mind as singing one of the greatest renditions of the National Anthem that I have ever heard in my lifetime. Every time I hear it, it gives me goosebumps.

We lost a legend that not only was talented, but put her heart and soul into her music. She will definitely be missed.
